123 panels

were made during AIDS 2010 – the 18th International AIDS Conference in Vienna, Austria [July 18-23, 2010]

In the “QuiltFactory”, which took place on the occasion of the 18th International AIDS Conference in Vienna in July 2010, 123 memorial panels were made according to the original example set by the American “NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt”.

The AIDS Memorial Quilt is a personal tribute to those who have lost their lives to HIV/AIDS. The “Quilt Factory” gave an opportunity to friends, partners/lovers, relatives and family members to commemorate their deceased loved ones. It provided an outlet for transforming mourning and grief into positive creative energy, making the quilt a powerful and visual reminder of our love and pride. The Quilt represents a promise to remember.

For the AIDS conference the size of the individual memory panels was reduced to a fourth in comparison to the original dimensions. Those panels were sewed together to four Quilt-blocks of 4 x 4 m each, which is equivalent to the original size of the international AIDS Memorial Quilt.

The “QuiltFactory” was a huge success. Sincere thanks to all participants who helped to keep the promise to remember alive.

[Statement of the QuiltFactory at the closing ceremony of the conference, July 23]

“Dear Conference-Participants and Delegates,

We are from the Quilt Factory and we are here to present the AIDS 2010 Memorial Quilt which was created this week in the Global Village. We are proud that so many of you joined our project. More panels were made this week then we ever expected. Only a quarter of them are on display here, finally we count 123 panels!

Thank you so much for creating so impressive panels with the names of those who have lost their lives to HIV/AIDS. Thank your for your empathy and creativity. Looking at your wonderful artworks on the panels we feel your love for those you have lost. Somehow they are among us.

Sometimes the little things we do are the most important. Thank you for keeping the memory alive and take care of yourselves.“
